Band of the Week- 3/21/07-Jarvis Cocker

I heard a song in the credits of "Children of Men" and I could not believe my ears. It had the word "c___"in it. Granted people in Britain use it more often in different ways than Americans do, it still plays loudly and anybody walking by on their way to see "The Pursuit of Happyness" might be subjected to hearing the word "c___" at least once while the song played with multiple times possible should the person decide to investigate. Some people think it's a gimmick but I can't help but kinda agree with Jarvis Cocker when he says that they're "still running the world".

Jarvis was the singer of the band Pulp. I think the thing they will be remembered for the most was the song on the "trainspotting" soundtrack.

New Crap Tuesdays 3/20/07

Disclaimer... bl;ogger is being weird and I can't figure out why my post looks so funny...

Good week for music, not so much for DVD...

DVD

Blood Diamond:

I watched this movie in a sneak preview at my theater, it was pretty good. A lot of people were turned off by Leo DiCaprio's accent but I thought he nailed it. Plenty of action and blood plus plenty of downtime for the ladies. Some people called it heavy handed, I call it a good rent if you've seen evrything else.

Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave

Ha ha another ROTLD, the 5th in the series, I'm not sure if this is strait to video or what but I'm sure it'll suck... In a good way... Here is a crappy homemade trailer...

Music

I'll Sleep When You're Dead by El-P

By far the best Hip-Hop album so far this year. Lots of unconventional guests like cat power and trent reznor. Cop this one for sure...

Drums And Guns by Low

Pretty good stuff, these guys are pretty consistent and I have listened to it a bunch...

We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse

Well, I'm sure everyone knows by Jhonny Marr of the Smiths fame is an official member of the band lending his guitar and songwriting talents. I personally haven't liked this and the last record but if you are a fan of "good news" then you will love this one...

Living With The Living by Ted Leo & The Pharmacists

I didn't like it... I think I already deleted my advance copy.

Opening ths weekend 3/09/07

300: This movie should pretty much rule. Frank Miller story done in the "Sin City" and "Sky Captain" style about an epic greek battle... The visuals are pretty cool but some of the editing is a lil bit flashy for my tastes, kind of like a music video. Everyone who I observed coming out of the theaters when I worked the midnight showing was very happy with it but they were die hard geeks.

A little plot background...

From Wikipedia: Battle of Thermopylae

Size of the Persian army

Fleet crew 517,610
Infantry 1,700,000
Cavalry 80,000
Arabs and Libyans 20,000
Greek puppet troops 324,000

Total 2,641,610

Size of the Greek army

Spartans 300
Mantineans 500
Tegeans 500
Arcadian Orchomenos 120
Other Arcadians 1,000
Corinthians 400
Phlians 200
Mycenaeans 80
Thespians 700
Thebans 400
Phocians 1,000
Opuntian Locrians 13

Total 5,200+

Trailer...

In Spainish...(moderately funny)

In German(More funny than the Spainish one).

Should be a pretty damn good movie. I watched at least 15 mins of it while I was working and there was 3 sold out midnight showings. I predict TONS of teenagers trying to sneak into the theaters since it's a rated r movie. Should be a pretty packed weekend, I'm guessing 300 will make at least 20 million this weekend with "Wild Hogs" Making 10 or so.

Zodiac: David Fincher film covered last week. It's almost 3 hours long.

Black Snake Moan: Covered last week

Reno 911!: Miami: Last weekend I said:

Reno 911!: Miami: Was alright. Worth a matinee ticket.

Battles The Band

The new (and first proper)album by Battles comes out May 15, I have a copy of it and it's some of the freshest stuff in instrumental post rock whateverness. Some of the songs could almost be on the radio. Some of the songs are very long and downright epic requiring multiple listenings to fully grasp the tracks. Every track is different and has elements not present on the ep's. Melodies are present which is uncommon for this stuff often times. I like the track rainbows, probably the most. It's crazy. Oh, and it's not fully instrumental though I can't make out a single word. It seems like they are using effects or he's doing the sigur ros thing and just making up a new language.

From Wikipedia:
The group's lineup is composed of well-known musicians, including ex-Helmet drummer John Stanier, ex-Don Caballero guitarist Ian Williams, ex-Lynx guitarist Dave Konopka, and Tyondai Braxton (son of Avantgarde Jazz musician Anthony Braxton), who also plays guitar and keyboard and creates live voice samples.

Here is a video for their song(atlas)...

New crap tuesdays 3/6/07

Dvd

Borat: If you haven't seen this movie and you aren't easily offended, rent it now...

Fast Food Nation: Worth a rent if not only for the fact that bruce willis is in it. It's very heavy handed but worth a view regardless.

Let's Go to Prison: Bob Odenkirk's directorial debut. I was a lil dissapointed, but still worth a watch.

Southpark Season 9: has the Ginger Kids episode... If you must own a southpark season, this one was pretty solid.

Music

Well it looks like I put the wrong week into the billboard website and I reviewed this week last week, so it looks like I am going to just cover some stuff I didn't last week...

Air:Pocket Symphony

Revolting Cocks: Cocktailmixxx

RJD2: Third Hand

White Flight:White Flight I listen to this one a lot.

Television Maquee Moon Re-Released

Modern life is war

Modern Life Is War is a hardcore band in the sense that fugazi is a hardcore band. They almost never do the double time beat. They singer screams in way that sounds like he really means what he's saying, but not fake to sound tough or snotty. I would say it's accessable to people who don't listen to hardcore. I listen to the album "witness" once a week.

Good news for fans...

First and foremost we are proud to announce that we have signed to Equal Vision Records. We will be recording our third album during the month of April at the Magpie Cage in Baltimore with J. Robbins. It will be out in late summer or early fall of this year. We will continue working with Lifeline Records and they will be releasing the vinyl LP version of our new album on the same day. The layout will feature artwork by an Iowa man of mystery who goes by the name Qojak. We will keep you updated on the details as they come.

Well, J. Robbins could make hootie and the blowfish sound good. Nuff said. Release date is 9/4/07 .

Literature-Map and listal.

I have a del.icio.us account for letting people know about websites and stuff. But every once in awhile there is something so amazing that I'll have to post about it. Here is one of them.

Listal is a catalouging website/social network. Yes, social network ala myspace. While I won't go on a full scale tirade about how much myspace sucks I will say that I secretly wish my friends would all migrate over to listal. You can keep track of all the books, dvds and cd's you own and also the movies you watch. You can also see other members collections which is always fun and it can help you keep track of what you loan to people.. It has a ton of features like groups and voting/rating of stuff. Everyone should join up.

The next site is http://www.literature-map.com/ . It's just a neat lil recomendation site for authours. Just check it out. It's unique.

When I thinkof baseball, I don't think of indie rock...

Some of the songs for the MLB 2007 video game are...
  • 311 "Down"
  • Bishop Allen "Middle Management"
  • Cities in Dust "Emergency"
  • Death From Above 1979 "Little Girl"
  • Dixie Witch "Set the Speed"
  • Editors "Munich"
  • Five Horse Johnson "I Can't Shake It"
  • Greatdayforup "Man's Ruin"
  • Les Savy Fav "Hold On To Your Genre"
  • Nerf Herder "High Five Anxiety"
  • Nirvana "Breed"
  • Sublime "Summertime"
  • Tapes 'n Tapes "Insistor"
  • The Jealous Sound "Naïve"
  • The M's "Plan Of The Man"
  • The Pixies "Mr. Grieves"
  • The Specials "A Message to you Rudy"
  • The Stooges "I Feel Alright"
  • The Thermals "A Passing Feeling"
  • The Walkmen "The Rat"
  • Wolfmother "Woman"
Hmmmmm. Apparently the 2k6 game had all matador records artists...

Live video of Against Me!

A video of Against Me! playing live has surfaced and I found it on one of my favorite blogs, "Late Night Wallflower". No word on whether the blog was named for the Jakob Dylan band but my suspicions say no.

The track is high energy and very punk rock. I like it though I hope the album has some ballady stuff. Did I mention they are on a major label(sire).

Here is the video for problems...

Dinosaur jr. album preview

Dinosaur jr. has a couple tracks from the new album entitled beyond that you can stream on myspace. The tracks are pretty high energy and see on par with previous albums. Check out their pictures as they look like they should be older. But they do look kinda old in this video. Sometimes I think James Iha and Billy Corgan stole the over the top shredding from J. Mascis.

Here is the video for "Feel the Pain " directed by Spike Jones though I couldn't find anything on the net to verify that.

The Taxrap Cometh

In one of the dumbest marketing campaigns I have ever seen, you tube and Turbotax have a contest for the best tax rap. Headlining the whole things is none other than Vanilla Ice! Here is his introduction to the contest.

Here is Ice's Tax Rap...

This one ain't too bad...

This one is a lil bit disturbing...

Famous people drink too...

From the mental floss blog...

I’ll Have What Her Majesty’s Having (famous folk and their drinks of choice)

Mangesh, Feb 16, 2007 18:59:29 GMT

The sad truth is, we can’t choose a brand of jeans unless a celebrity endorses them. Just can’t do it. Nor can we pick a rental car service until we know some sort of professional athlete is comfortable shilling for their brand. That’s why we’re forgoing those no-name Nectarini’s we order night after night for a delicious celebrity-endorsed beverage. Because if it’s good enough for the Queen, Ernest Hemingway, or even Lyndon B. Johnson, then darn it if it isn’t good enough for mental_floss.

Queen Elizabeth II – More than tea, Her Majesty prefers a Gordon’s gin and tonic. Oh, and don’t forget the lemon slices. The British Queen takes 3 of them with each drink.

Lyndon B. Johnson – Scotch and soda. When it was hot outside, the former president loved to drive slowly around his Texas ranch in an open top convertible, taking long pulls from a large foam glass. When his cup runneth lower, Johnson simply dangled it out his window. Immediately, a Secret Service agent would run forward, grab the cup, race back to the service car following the president’s, re-fill the beverage, then hustle back to hand it off to the Prez. Secret Service with a smile.

Ernest Hemingway – While he always portrayed himself to be a man’s man, Hemingway loved daiquiris. It’s true! The man who loved boxing, fishing and bull-fighting also loved syrupy drinks– particularly the ones made at the Floridita Bar in Havana, where they substituted maschino liqueur for sugar in the diabetic writer’s rounds.

Oprah Winfrey – Lemon Drop Martinis. What can you say? I guess all the money in the world simply can’t buy class. (Just kidding, Oprah. Let’s help the healing begin, though. Invite us on your show and we’ll talk through this.)

Rush Limbaugh – Nothing by Port wine for our portly friend.

Adam Clayton Powell – The first African American to become a major figure in Congress drank Scotch with a healthy shot of milk. Supposedly, the milk calmed his ulcers while the scotch worked on his nerves.

Winston Churchill – Despite being a big fan of martinis and having a mother who was responsible for the invention of the Manhattan cocktail, Churchy preferred sipping on Johnny Walker Red!

So, what about whiskey- that delicious drink of drinks?
Sure, you’ve seen it on the list above, but it’s still a dicey choice. Here’s a quick for and against:
FOR: Frank Sinatra loved him some Jack Daniels.
AGAINST: Janis Joplin. While she loved her Southern Comfort, and always carried a fifth on stage with her, she’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for drinking.
FOR: Hunter S. Thompson – Wild Turkey on the rocks. If you’re going for an authentic Thompson though, you might need to add pills to taste.
AGAINST: Saddam Hussein – While he asked for hot water laced with honey for his last meal, Hussein’s drink of choice was whiskey on the rocks.

[MUSIC]Slayer's New Album Banned In India

http://www.punknews.org/article/20195

Slayer banned in India

Slayer's new album, Christ Illusion continues to cause controversy worldwide. The album was recently banned in India. The ban is particularly interesting since Christians are a minority in India, which is largely made up of Hindus, Muslims and Buddhist.

Early this week, Joseph Dias, general secretary of the Mumbai-based Catholic Secular Forum (CSF), issued a statement taking "strong exception" to the album's cover artwork, which he said depicts "Christ with a missing eye and amputated arms." He added, "we also condemn the track, 'Skeleton Christ' as the lyrics are an insult to Christianity." The CSF also sent a memorandum to Mumbai's police commissioner, adding that the album "will affect the sensibilities of the Muslims on the track 'Jihad' and secular Indians who have respect for all faiths."

Kaveri Khullar, marketing manager, EMI India said in an interview, "We met with the CSF and were apologetic while assuring them that all copies of the album would be pulled out. We have no plans of re-issuing it in any way."

The CSF had earlier protested against the Indian release of "The Da Vinci Code" which led the Censor Board to instruct the India distributor, Mumbai-based Sony Pictures Releasing India, to include a notice to accompany the film to explain that it was a work of fiction.

The band's previous album, God Hates Us All was released in the United States with an altered cover, and Christ Illusion appears on Amazon with the cover art obscured.

I personally think this whole thing is quite funny.

[VIDEO]WEIRD ASS VIDEO!@!!!!!

Yay for Bollywood Michael Jackson ripoffs...

[MUSIC] The Coup's video for "Me and Jesus The Pimp"

Not to be nitpicky or anything but shouldn't it be "Jesus the Pimp and I"? Anyways, what an awesome vid. I don't like performance vids and this one is not. Just check it.

[MUSIC] Champion too release a dvd of their final show.

Champion was a really awesome hardcore band from seattle. Very traditional sounding and super damn good and very positive. While hardcore may not be very technical compared to metal, I find that metal is often very negative with their lyrics and it's nice to hear uplifting music with high energy.

Apparently they have a dvd of their last show coming out, you know I'll be copping it.

[MUSIC] The Dischord of a Forgotten Sketch

I heard about this Canadian band called "the discord of a forgotten sketch" from punknews.org. Normally I don't normally look into new new bands so this was an anomaly for me. I decided to give them a try and wen to their record labels myspace page and gave them a listen and was pleasantly surprised to heard some good noisy math rock. If you like good noisy math rock I strongly suggest you check them.

http://www.thediscordofaforgottensketch.com is their trippy ass website, it's kinda hard finding the links but I guess that is half the fun.
